The Mesob<\/p>\n
As a symbol of Ethiopian culinary tradition, the Mesob hides the fragrant food under its big hat. It protects and keeps warm \u2013 however openness is its purpose. The protecting roof allows for cultivating a culture of openness, it divides and yet connects, it defends insights and releases outlooks: It serves as an architectural element and as a metaphor.<\/p>\n

The Building and the Garden<\/p>\n
The low building with the slightly pitched roof is based on the typology of the neighbour houses. The house is embedded in such a way that only minimal changes to the natural slope of the terrain are necessary. The protected trees provide a starting point for the garden design. The building perimeter is chosen in a way that they are preserved. Extended with new plantings they form groups of trees, which – together with the building – divide the garden into different areas.<\/p>\n

The Stone<\/p>\n
A rock church in Lalibela, Ethiopia or in Raron in Switzerland, the basalt of Rasch Dasch\u00e4n or the gneiss of the Gotthard massif: for centuries, both cultures have repeatedly sought after points of reference related to stone, its rough quality is accentuated in the project. Large-format broken natural stones are set into the concrete skeleton like display boards. Rich occurrences and local craftsmanship allow stone to be used as an economic building material in Ethiopia. The traces of the boreholes are not removed, the mining process as a unique drawing shapes the expression of each stone.<\/p>\n
