Grellingen is embedded in the gentle hills of the Basel region in the middle of the green Laufental valley, yet not far from Basel. The terrain sloping south towards the Birs and the views to the hilltops give the plot its special charm. The village began to grow as a street village with small groups of houses and later developed very heterogeneously. The workers’ houses belonging to the paper mill, which were built in a bending row along the street, stand out as an interesting connecting point. Also in the wider surroundings of the plot the motive of the row building can be found again and again.<\/p>\n

The historical appearance of the village is characterised by plastered facades, wooden cladding and tiled roofs in reddish brown shades. Especially at the loose edges of the village, many buildings with dark wooden facades and rooftiles in matching colours can be found, that mark the transition from the built environment into the green valley. The project proposes a facade of vertical wooden cladding staggered above the concrete base. The floors are made visible by dark metal profiles. At the same time, these profiles protect the claddings grain ends from water.<\/p>\n

With the help of the entrance\u2013courtyards, light can be brought into the depth of the floor plan, so that the two larger apartments can benefit from the interrelation between the street and valley sides. The rooms facing the street are lit with French windows, while generous openings in the south provide a view into the landscape.<\/p>\n

The floor plans have been developed specifically for the site. Although the north sides with the rooms follow the course of the road, all living areas are oriented exactly to the south in order to benefit optimally from the view and the lighting. Whilst the bedrooms remain constantly rectangular, the living areas take advantage of the intersecting geometries to form generous spaces.<\/p>\n
