Like a branched green lung, the Langgr\u00fct stretches through the neighborhood. Already the name, “die lange Gr\u00fct” (the long Green), tells of the history of its origin and of its morphological peculiarity: a long cleared strip at the edge of the forest, which on the historical map by J. Wild (1850) merges downhill into the larger Gr\u00fctland, the R\u00fctiwiesen and the Holzwiesen \u2013 all names for arable land that had been created by logging. The typology of the green corridor and the history as a place of timber extraction are the starting points of the design.<\/p>\n
The lot along the new school assumes a dual function: on the one hand, the narrow strip marks the end point of the contiguous green space, transitioning from the urban green to the backdrop of the wooded hills close by. On the other hand, the elongated path between Triemlistrasse and in der Ey forms a very concise space, which can just be grasped as a whole from the pedestrian perspective. The long sloping path with the flanking green strips, the beech hedges and rows of trees represents a very unique typology, which is strengthened and further developed by the setting of the new school.<\/p>\n

The proposal emphasizes the typological stretching, but also works out the already grown focal point with the prominent group of trees about halfway along the Langgr\u00fctweg. While the roof wraps the two houses under one shell, the generous opening between the schools allows for a cross-connection to the second unique outdoor space on the parcel: Like a soft carpet, the campus flanked by schools rolls gently down the slope. The coupling point of the two distinctive open spaces becomes the hub of the entire site. The group of trees is not only preserved, but unmistakably inscribes itself into the form of the building. The roof and loggias happily follow the outline of the protected treetops, and the long greenway branches out yet finds its way back into linear movement. Whether students are arriving in the morning, watching the wet courtyard during rainy recess, going to sports, or just hanging out with friends: The covered passageway is the new center of the campus.<\/p>\n
